Bangladesh-Thailand relationship boasts of strong political and cultural bonds. With their diplomatic ties established on October 5, 1972, Thailand opened its Embassy in Dhaka in 1974 and Bangladesh setup it’s Embassy in Bangkok in 1975 at the ambassadorial level. There have been numerous exchanges of visits between the two friendly countries; the highest-ranking visits from Bangladesh being the visit by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 1979, President Hussain Mohammad Ershad in 1985, 1988 and 1990, Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmad in 1990 and Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in December 2002 and 2004. The highest ranking Thai dignitaries to visit Bangladesh were Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanond in 1983, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn in 1992 and Prime Minister Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra in July and December 2002 and January 2004. With the ‘Look-East’ foreign policy initiative of Bangladesh, the Government to Government and people to people relationship has been growing from strength to strength since the establishment of diplomatic relationship between Bangladesh and Thailand.

Business travelers require a letter of invitation from company based in Bangladesh, containing their Tax Identification Number and attestation from Chamber of Commerce or Bangladeshi government ministries with corresponding passport name and passport number and holding return air tickets and sufficient funds for stay and all documents for next destination. Citizens of countries where there is a Bangladesh Mission must obtain a visa before going to Bangladesh.

It is estimated that there are 80-90 thousand Bangladeshi origin people living in Singapore. Out of them 90% are migrant workers doing different kinds of skilled and semi-skilled jobs. They are mostly employed in ship building and construction sectors. The remaining Bangladeshis are doing professional jobs. Among the professionals, most are mariners followed by engineers, bankers, management consultants and university and polytechnic faculty members. Bangladeshis are also involved in business as well. Bangladeshis in Singapore are socially very active. A number of social and cultural organizations are working among the Bangladeshi community. Of them the Singapore Bangladesh Society and Singapore Chapter of the Bangladesh Institute of Engineers are the most prominent ones. Bangladeshis also run two schools where Bangla is taught as per curriculum of the Singapore Ministry of Education.

Over the years Norway has supported many cultural events in Bangladesh. Norway has a long-standing cooperation with Centre for Asian Theatre (CAT). The funding provides promotion of human rights, social development and Norwegian culture through professional theatre. CAT is internationally reputed for its staging of Henrik Ibsen`s plays, and there was a big international Ibsen festival in Dhaka in 2009. During the present collaboration with Norway both classic and contemporary playwrights are staged by CAT. For many years Norway has supported capacity-building in the area of cultural heritage in Bangladesh. One such project is the cooperation between the Embassy, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) in improving national art conservation expertise. Chobi Mela is an international photo exhibition organized by South Asian Institute of Photography every second year, sponsored by the Embassy. The Norwegian photographer Morten Krogvold has conducted workshops during these melas.
